Bolz Center Collegium 2016: The Psychology of Philanthropy through the Advanced Study of Donor Motivation
The Bolz Center for Arts Administration is this country's premier MBA program with a specialized educational focus that links arts and business practice. Every other year during the fall semester, we invite our alumni, guest presenters, practitioners, and students from across the country to the Bolz Center Collegium for continued learning on current topics and trends in and outside of the arts and nonprofit sectors. In recent years, we have noticed a trend toward a Bolz education that leads our graduates and friends into business, nonprofit and education positions outside of the traditional arts. We are excited by this development and therefore, are endeavoring to program Collegium topics that span a broad spectrum of interest and connection to our alumni and friends, regardless of their involvement in the arts. It is this philosophy and approach that leads us to announce our exciting and timely Collegium topic for this year:

Bolz Center Collegium 2016 will target the psychology of philanthropy and donor motivation.

Researchers in psychology, economics, and marketing have long endeavored to understand what motivates individuals to donate to charity. We will examine this rich history to provide a foundation for the days discussion and explore current research findings on why donors give, how they respond to fundraising requests, how they interact with new fundraising tactics, and what drives donations in the current fundraising environment.

Keynote addresses include Bolz Center alumnus and Kent State University Associate Professor of Marketing, Jennifer Wiggins Johnson, as well as François Ortalo-Magné, Albert O. Nicholas Dean, Wisconsin School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison. We will also engage with a panel of experienced development professionals, and a panel of esteemed donors to the Wisconsin School of Business, all of whom will help us connect the research implications to the practice of philanthropy today.

Keynote speaker Dr. Jennifer Wiggins Johnson explains, "As financial resources have diminished in recent years, the fundraising environment has become increasingly crowded and competition for donations has increased. At the same time, new tactics and opportunities have arisen that have complicated the fundraising landscape. In response, researchers have become increasingly interested in examining charitable donation behavior. Their findings can provide insights to help fundraising professionals understand what motivates philanthropy and how donors perceive fundraising strategies and tactics, better enabling us to break through the clutter and reach donors effectively."

Everyone is welcome to attend Bolz Center Collegium 2016, particularly our alumni and friends working in development and advancement across the entire nonprofit sector.  We will also be soliciting ideas and revealing early plans for the celebration of the Bolz Center at 50 years, which will occur in 2019.
