Ted Geltner, author of BLOOD, MARROW AND BONE, the just released full-length, authorized biography of Harry Crews, is coming to Savannah!

The Book Lady Bookstore has joined forces with Roots Up Gallery to host an author reception & talk.

But, there's more!

Immediately following the author's talk & reception, Savannahs award-winning Psychotronic Film Society will present a rare public screening of the lost 1993 documentary HARRY CREWS: GUILTY AS CHARGED.

And together they will raffle off a specially commissioned portrait of Harry Crews by internationally-known artist Panhandle Slim.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
It's the first full-length biography of one of the most unlikely figures in twentieth-century American literature, a writer who emerged from a dirt-poor South Georgia tenant farm and went on to create a singularly unique voice of fiction. With books such as Scar Lover, Body, and Naked in Garden Hills, Crews opened a new window into southern life, focusing his lens on the poor and disenfranchised, the people who skinned the hogs and tended the fields, the grits, as Crews affectionately called his characters and himself. He lived by a code of his own design, flouting authority and baring his soul, and the stories of his whiskey-and-blood-soaked lifestyle created a myth to match any of his fictional creations. His outlaw life, his distinctive voice and the context in which he lived combine to form the elements of a singularly compelling narrative about an underappreciated literary treasure.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ted Geltner is an associate professor of journalism at Valdosta State University, adviser to the campus newspaper, and author of Last King of the Sports Page: The Life and Career of Jim Murray. He worked for seventeen years as a writer and editor at a number of newspapers, including the Gainesville Sun, the Scranton Times-Tribune, and the Ocala Star-Banner.

ABOUT THE FILM:
The award-winning Psychotronic Film Society of Savannah has arranged for a rare public screening of the "lost" 1993 documentary HARRY CREWS: GUILTY AS CHARGED, which has remained virtually unseen for the past 20 years.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tom Thurman (who also made the 2006 doc BUY THE TICKET, TAKE THE RIDE: HUNTER S. THOMPSON ON FILM), HARRY CREWS: GUILTY AS CHARGED is an hour-long, intimate portrait of the controversial,
Georgia-born author, and features candid and exclusive interviews with Crews himself, as well as a number of his close friends and associates.

The film, which has never been released commercially on DVD, is considered perhaps the finest and most illuminating profiles of Crews ever made.

Says PFS of SAV Executive and Artistic Director Jim Reed:
"From the moment I discovered this unpretentious and revealing documentary, I knew it was something I wanted to find a way to present to a Savannah audience. It's an
unjustly obscure film that's deserving of wider recognition, and I'm thrilled that director Tom Thurman has allowed me to screen it in conjunction with the Book Lady Bookstore and Roots Up Gallery's celebration
of Harry Crews' one-of-a-kind life and works."

ABOUT THE ART:
Roots Up Gallery has commissioned artist Panhandle Slim (dare we call him Savannah's favorite community chronicler?) to create a portrait of Harry Crews. His provocative paintings on wood, edged in bold black lines, brightly colored with a notable handwritten quote will be raffled off during the Feast of Crews event. This is a unique opportunity to own a work by the highly coveted regional artist.

Remember - admission to the author's talk and reception and the documentary screening is just $10.

Signed copies of the new biography will be available for sale for $32.95, and Raffle Tickets for a chance to win Panhandle Slim's original painting will be available for $2 each (or 10 tickets for $10).

HOWEVER, you can save big by charging a Special Discount Bundle in advance through this site, which includes admission, a personally signed book and a Raffle Ticket for just $35.

That's a savings of $10!

Seating is limited, so charge your tickets or Bundles ASAP to avoid disappointment...

Also, be aware that NO Tickets or Passes will be mailed, but instead they will be held under your name at the door on the day of the event.

REMEMBER: YOU MUST SHOW PROPER ID THAT MATCHES THE NAME ON THE ORDER FOR US TO RELEASE YOUR TICKETS OR PASSES TO YOU. THIS IS FOR YOUR SECURITY AND PROTECTION.

So, if you are buying Tickets or Passes for someone else as a gift, understand that we CANNOT release them to your friends. You would have to come that night and pick them up yourself, and then hand them personally to your guests.

We look forward to seeing you at the FEAST OF CREWS!
