QUID QUO - new seatown post-punkk
PINKWASH (Philadelphia, PA) - Philadelphia duo Pinkwash is a new band, but their origins go back a few years. The project is a continuation of heavy punk duo Ingrid, which guitarist Joey Doubek and Ashley Arnwine (also recently of Waxahatchee) formed while living in Washington, D.C. during the late 2000s. Their pre-established friendshipand the trust it entailshas been necessary for the creation of Pinkwashs songs, many of which spring from Doubeks feelings surrounding the 2009 death of his mother from breast cancer. "It's like continuing the process of an overarching grief cycle: long after acceptance comes extreme bitterness," he said in an interview last year. "Which is an easier state to be in to write angry, loud music."
To be sure, Pinkwash is plenty angry and plenty loud. On "Cancer Money"from a 7" single on DC label Sister Polygonthe duo sound like they are trying to bash a hole through their practice space wall. The minimalist heavy-metal-inspired riffs call to mind K Records heavy rockers, Karp, albeit without that bands sense of cheer or humor. Eventually, churning tones and squealing drones give way to a field recording of buzzing, wheezing machinery; turns out, its a recording of Doubeks mothers breathing machine. The usual adjectives that get tossed around in music that deals with death and dyingfunereal, solemn, hauntingdont fit here. Amid the feeling of powerlessness, Pinkwash use their music to re-assert control, confronting grief and anguish with high volume catharsis rather than quiet acceptance. - Pitchfork.com -- www.pinkwash.bandcamp.com -- www.fvckthemedia.com/issue47/your-cure
