About Domestic Violence Domestic Violence is a pattern of coercive and manipulative behaviors one person uses to gain power and control over an intimate partner or other family members. Violence is a learned behavior, and it is passed from one generation to the next. Children who witness or experience violence in their home must receive intervention to disrupt this cycle and avoid perpetuating this lethal inheritance. Artemis Center works every day to lead our community in its commitment to end Domestic Violence. Every 9 seconds a woman is battered. One in Four women experiences domestic violence in her lifetime. One in Seven men experiences domestic violence in his lifetime. One in Five college students experiences sexual assault on college campuses in the United States. Domestic violence happens to people from all walks of life regardless of class, ethnicity, race, faith tradition, age or sexual orientation. 80 to 90% of children living in violent homes are aware of the abuse. Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women - more than auto accidents, rape, and muggings combined. Healthcare costs associated with domestic violence and intimate partner rape and stalking exceeds $5.8 billion each year.
