Shady Groove feat. Donna Jean Godchaux
Donna Jean Godchaux is an American singer best known for spending the 1970s as a vocalist in both the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band. Born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Donna Jean was a vocalist at both Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and Fame Studios, and recorded on albums such as Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley), When a Man Loves a Woman (Percy Sledge), and Boz Scaggs first solo album. After life with the Dead, Donna and Keith Godchaux created the Heart of Gold Band with drummer Greg Anton, and guitarist Steve Kimock. Donna Jean resumed a serious focus on her singing in the 1990s, recording a new Heart of Gold Band album, At the Table, and singing with Phil & Friends as well as in her own Donna Jean Band.
Shady Groove delivers an invigorating dose of funky, blues & jazz-infused rock and R&B. It is good-time dance music that draws from a diversity of American popular genres and incorporates elements of gospel, reggae, and other world music. Lengthy, improvisational flights through a wide range of musical styles provide inspiration for high-spirited crowds whose kinetic dance floor energy serves as a vibrant counterpart to the musical journey transpiring on stage. The strength of the group is reflected in the scope of their original material. From jazzy, ethereal, instrumental excursions to intelligent, lyrically honest songs, the music of Shady Groove ranges from reflective introspection to full-throttle, rocking abandon: Jerry Brown (vocals, guitar) delivers the material with the honest feel of someone who has lived a life of music for over twenty years. Matt Hartle (lead guitar) creates hypnotic, fluidly lyrical lines. Dave Faulkner (keyboard/organ) establishes dynamic tension, fueling a musical voyage. Bret Bailey (drums) brings big, propulsive dance beats and driving percussive exploits that fuse seamlessly with the thick, roving grooves of Jimmy Hubbard on bass.
