Boston Scottish Fiddle Club Gala with Special Guests Hanneke Cassel, Katie McNally, Ed Pearlman and the Boston Scottish Fiddle Orchestra Led by Neil Pearlman
This event is a benefit gala to support the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club. The Boston Scottish Fiddle Orchestra, directed by Neil Pearlman, will provide entertainment and back-up to a fantastic line-up of musical guests including Hanneke Cassel, Katie McNally, Ed Pearlman, Rachel Reeds and others. This is a unique opportunity to catch many of the area's finest Scottish Celtic fiddlers and support the preservation of this fine traditional musical style. The event will also include a silent auction, cash bar, dancing, a session and light refreshments.

"Exuberant and rhythmic, somehow both wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness," says the Boston Globe about Hanneke Cassel's playing. Such charismatic fiddling has brought the native Oregonian many honors and awards.    She is the 1997 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, she holds a Bachelors of Music in Violin Performance from Berklee College of Music, and she has performed and taught across North America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, China, and India. Influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton Island fuse together with grooves and musical innovations from the hip Boston bluegrass/Americana scene to give Hanneke a uniquely American approach to Scottish music. She creates sounds on the cutting edge of acoustic music, while retaining the integrity and soul of the tradition.

The new face of Scottish fiddling in the USA" (The Living Tradition), Katie McNally has made waves in both the American folk music scene and abroad since the release of her debut album, Flourish, in 2013. Her latest project synthesizes her elegant and powerful fiddle playing with the talents of genre-crossing pianist Neil Pearlman and bluegrass phenom Shauncey Ali on viola. Recent covergirl for Fiddler Magazine, Katie has performed and taught fiddle courses in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Scotland, England, and France. A member of the cross genre fiddle super-group Childsplay since 2009, she appears on their CD and concert video release, As the Crow Flies, produced by legendary Irish fiddler, Liz Carroll. McNally performs regularly as a soloist and has collaborated in the past with guitarist Eric McDonald and all-woman trad group, Long Time Courting.

Pianist and mandolinist Neil Pearlman is rapidly distinguishing himself as a uniquely innovative artist in the contemporary traditional music scene. Called a tremendous pianist on BBC Radio Scotland and a force to be reckoned with by WGBHs Brian ODonovan, Neil is recognized in many Celtic music circles for his unique approach to the piano. Rooted in traditional Cape Breton piano styles, Neil brings in ideas from many other genres and the result is an exciting new sound that remains true to its traditional roots. An accomplished Cape Breton step dancer as well, Neil grew up in the family band Highland Soles, led by father and mother Ed Pearlman and Laura Scott, both influential Scottish music and dance figures in the US. Neil currently performs with a wide range of musical projects from traditional Scottish fiddle music to contemporary jazz. These include Albas Edge (Scottish/Jazz/Latin quartet), Soulsha (Scottish/West African/Funk 8 piece band), The Katie McNally Trio, Party of Three (Contradance band) and Neils duo with father Ed Pearlman.

Ed Pearlman has performed, taught, and promoted fiddle music, particularly that of Scotland and Cape Breton for over 30 years.  He has worked with many of the top fiddlers from Scotland and Cape Breton. Equal parts Northeast Scottish and Cape Breton dance hall, Ed's playing is a rich expression of the multi-faceted Boston Scottish music scene, a scene that he played a central role in creating.  Ed directed the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club for 18 years, after cofounding it in 1981. Fiddle Club soloists and workshop leaders included Alasdair Fraser, Buddy MacMaster, Aly Bain, Natalie MacMaster, Jerry Holland, John McCusker, Joe Cormier and many more. Working closely with so many masters of Cape Breton and Scottish fiddling put Ed in a unique position to be influenced by both traditions. The result is a fiddle style deeply rooted in both Scottish and Cape Breton traditions, reflecting the rich musical heritage of the Boston area.

The Boston Scottish Fiddle Club's mission is to provide opportunities for members and the public to play and enjoy traditional Celtic music from Scotland and Cape Breton. We accomplish this through monthly workshops led by recognized fiddle artists of the Scottish and Cape Breton tradition, hosting sessions where members and the public can play as well as listen, sponsor the Boston Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and newly formed Fourth Friday Young Fiddlers Night, to ensure the tradition will continue in the Boston area.
