Although his name is virtually unknown today, Giovanni Pacini (1796-1867) was one of the most popular and prolific Italian opera composers of the first half of the 19th century. He was a celebrity whose operas were produced internationally and performed by the greatest singers of his day, and whose colorful romances with princesses and countesses had the opera world abuzz. In his fifty-year career he composed more than 70 grand operas produced at the most prestigious theaters, including La Scala, La Fenice, and Teatro San Carlo. His tragic opera Malvina di Scozia premiered in 1851 at Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and played in Brazil and Malta, only to fall into obscurity after 1862.

Fast forward to 2016: Vertical Player Repertory, in a project spearheaded by the Donizetti Society's Thea Cook, has commissioned music editor and conductor Hans Schellevis to create a new performing edition of Malvina di Scozia from primary sources, offering New York audiences a rare chance to hear this thrilling, long-lost work.

The performances are part of the New York Opera Festival running through May and June 2016. The opera will be performed in concert with piano accompaniment.

ABOUT VERTICAL PLAYER REPERTORY

A pioneer of the alternative opera movement in New York City, Vertical Player Repertory creates ensemble-driven opera theatre in extraordinary venues. Founded in 1998 in a Brooklyn storefront, VPR's unconventional spirit has informed an eclectic mix of repertoire from the 17th to the 21st centuries, including La Calisto in a factory courtyard on the Gowanus Canal, Il Tabarro on an oil tanker in the last active shipping port in Brooklyn, and Yoav Gal's The Dwarf in a vacant, maze-like raw space in midtown Manhattan. The ongoing performance series miniatures behind the door offers vocal recitals, instrumental concerts and theater in VPR's storefront, Behind the Door, described by The New York Times as "one of the most intimate spaces for opera in all New York." Vertical Player Repertory's work has been called "exhilarating" (Opera News), "intense" (The New York Times), "thrilling theater" (Opera Today), "wonderfully smart and simple" (Seen and Heard International), and "consistently innovative" (TimeOutNY).
