Great Expectations: Ashkenazy, Ryo, Meinich and the Orpheus Academy
Internationally awarded soloist Meehae Ryo (Korea) lovingly performs Schumanns Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, a piece that was to define cello concertos for decades to come.
Also on the repetoire is Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess, a warmly nostalgic, miniature antique meant to whisk us away to the 16th century court of a Spanish Princess.
We end with the familiar pomp and joy of Beethovens second symphony, written by the composer as he began to understand that his deafness was incurable. Confiding later that he contemplated suicide, he wrote in a letter, I would have ended by life. Only my art held me back. It seemed to me impossible to leave the world until I had produced all that I felt was within me.
