RVA Dance Collective Presents HOME.
RVA Dance Collective returns to the stage at Dogtown Dance Theatre for their seventh annual spring repertory concert. The collective has been excited to share work with nearly sold out audiences each year in this wonderful space we are so lucky to call home.
This season has been extremely exciting for the collective, furthering their mission to bridge the gap among artists of all genres in the Richmond community. Following a huge turn-out to the collaborative exhibition with Art Works Galleries and Studios, RVA Dance Collective will round out the season with a fully produced evening of inspired choreography.
The collectives co-artistic directors, Jess Burgess and Danica Kalemdaroglu will both show new group works. Burgess has been working with a dance film artist, Torian Ugworji, this season for her full-company piece titled Awake. The piece is a discovery of what happened physically and mentally after a tragic car accident that left her in a coma for several weeks.
Each year, the company offers the opportunity to a company dancer to have their work produced and performed at Dogtown. This year, Burgess and Kalemdaroglu are excited to produce a new group puece by company member Desmin Taylor.
RVA Dance Collective is also thrilled to invite a few special guests this season. The advanced student company from The Dance Company in Mechanicsville will perform alongside the professional company again this year. RVA Dance Collective aims to give these young dancers a chance to perform in a professionally produced dance concert for experience and exposure.
We are also welcoming hip hop crew Pace Setters to join us for this year's concert! With innovative hip hop choreography and a large cast of dancers, RVA Dance audience members are in for a treat with this addition to the lineup this year!
And lastly, RVA Dance Collective is delighted to announce special guest Kelly Bartnik. She joined the company for a weekend in September and created a brand new work for the company.
Kelly is a choreographer, performer and teacher who has been working professionally in NY since 2001. She is an original cast member of both the Boston and NY productions of Sleep No More and has also had the pleasure of performing with Cora Dance, Melissa Briggs Dance, South Brooklyn Shakespeare, Woodshed Collective, Switch N Play, and Shelter Theatre Group among others. Her own work has been presented at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange/BAX, BRIC Studio, DTW (formerly), Dixon Place, Joyce Soho, James Madison University, Long Island University, Arena Stage and The Publick Playhouse. She has been a guest professor at Sarah Lawrence College and director of BAXCo, the teen repertory dance company at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange. She is a founding member of GK1 Productions, a video production company specializing in dance films that premiered their latest film Reins, commissioned by Dances Made to Order. She is currently performing in two upcoming webseries, Welcome to Our Mansion and 3L, and will be joining the first round of accepted students in the new Choreography MFA Program at Wilson College, led by program director RoseAnne Spradlin. www.kellybartnik.com
The evening promises to be an eclectic and exciting night of art inspired dance and performances. RVA Dance Collective will present two shows, Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14, both shows at 8pm.
