Cora Voce - Winter Concerts
We are pleased to be jointly performing this work with the Northwest Repertory Singers and the Rainier Symphony under the direction of Dr. Paul Schultz. The Missa in Angustiis, also known as the Lord Nelson Mass, is Haydn's largest, most well-known and beloved choral work. Although it is his only mass set in a minor key, it is far from the dark style of Mozart's Requiem written in the same decade. Rather, it is most notable for the florid passages sung by the soprano soloist and the triumphantly joyous finale'. The orchestra features trumpets and timpani giving it a decidedly military feel. It was first performed within months of the Battle of Trafalgar in honor of Lord Nelson who is credited with annihilating Napoleon's forces.
