In conjunction with the Second Annual Virginia Transgender Empowerment and Information Summit (Virginia TIES), Sistah Sinema-Richmond presents 3 award winning, thought-provoking short films. Followed by a Q & A with writer/director, Terésa Alexander Dowell-Vest.
1. "Kuma Hina - A Place In The Middle" - The true story of a young Hawaiian girl who dreams of leading her school's all-male hula troupe, and of an inspiring teacher who uses traditional culture to empower her. Written and directed by Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson.
2. "Stealth" - Sammy is a transgender child. She was born a boy but is living in stealth as a girl with the support of her mother and a doctor. At her new school, Sammy finds the friends she has always dreamed of having and tells them her secret in confidence. When the threat of a betrayal arises, Sammy must decide whether to run or to live as her whole self. Written by Melissa Hoppe and directed by Bennett Lassiter
3. "Shirts vs Skins" - Dale Michaels, an ordinary man with an ordinary life...and that's what makes him extraordinary. "Shirts vs. Skins" follows the life of a FTM transman as he navigates friendships, career, and love. Written and directed by Terésa Alexander Dowell-Vest. Starring Tajir S. Hawkins.
