chatterbird presents a special evening of music with internationally-renowned erhu virtuoso Ma Xiaohui. Critics have referred to her as "an artist who speaks with the world through erhu," and "a musician who plays with heart." She is perhaps most readily recognized for her duet with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma on the Oscar-winning soundtrack for the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Among her diverse associations, Ma is a member of the United Nations Oriental Art Center and guest professor at Southwest Jiaotong University (Chengdu). She also advises the Hong Kong Youth Music Association and the Ningbo Folk Music Orchestra, and directs her own Shanghai Xiaohui Arts Center.
Ma Xiaohui will perform alongside chatterbird in a concert of music specially composed and arranged for her by chatterbird's electric guitarist and composer-in-residence, Bryan Clark. Ma and Clark have a history of touring internationally and have worked together on special projects that celebrate the sound and spirit of East-meets-West. The Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville, led by Jen-Jen Lin, will present new choreography to accompany the premiere.
Additionally, chatterbird will present several pieces for Nashville audiences, including a work for flute, recorded theremin, and Tibetan singing bowls; an experimental piece for solo saxophone by Japanese composer Ryo Noda; a new work from percussionist Jesse Strauss; and an aleatoric work by Jason Treuting that uses newspaper clippings to guide the structure of the composition.
