Creative Musicianship One Day Workshop
MAKE SOME NOISE! Explore the creative possibilities of music through sound-making activities and group composing led by composers Jessie Downs and Doug Farrand. Through learning by doing, students will gain a physical understanding of how to use sound colours, rhythm, pitch, and other structures to turn their ideas, feelings, images, and stories into music.

Students will also build instruments to take home!

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

Ages 8 and up. Two dates available, June 20th and July 18th.

In 2014, Jessie and Doug brought their class to our students in Orange, and it was so much fun, that we decided to share it with the world.

Make sure to watch the video from their successful 2014 fundraiser to learn a little about the class and the teachers.

This one day workshop is a great way for your child to try something new. Hosted at ORNG Ink, a youth arts collective in the ValleyArts District of West Orange/Orange NJ, this sonic adventure takes place in a welcoming and inspiring environment. Lunch is provided.

Douglas Farrand is a composer, musician, and educator. Having lived in and around Nottinghamshire (UK), Cork (Ireland), Singapore, and Ohio (US), he currently resides and works in Orange, NJ where his primary interest is in music and teaching that invites us to explore our myriad processes of listening. His work has been performed in the USA, Canada, and Switzerland, and includes close collaborative work with fellow composers, performers, and artists. Douglas studied composition with Josh Levine and Ashley Furey at Oberlin Conservatory and has received additional mentorship from Reiko Füting, Christopher Fox, Michael Pisaro, Tim Feeney, and Vic Rawlings.

Jessie Downs (b. 1991)  is a composer, vocalist, and teaching artist for whom music is a medium for sharing personal experiences and entering into community with others. Her compositional aesthetic is rooted in the exploration of delicate and wild sound phenomena as heard in soundscapes and other musics. Over the past few years, Jessie has made music with variety of spiritual and educational communities, developing and implementing music curricula, workshops, and informal learning environments aimed at developing the creative voices of students of all ages. A classically trained vocalist, she is passionate about performing works by other living composers. Jessie is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory with a BMus in Composition and will be entering into a Masters/ PhD program in Composition at the University of Buffalo in fall of 2015. She currently lives and works in Orange, NJ with her partner Doug Farrand.
