Uncle Gunjiro's Girlfriend
An engrossing family story of Gunjiro Aoki and Gladys Emery, a Japanese man and American woman who fell in love, and were married at Trinity Episcopal Parish on March 27, 1909, when interracial marriage was illegal in many parts of the country, and highly irregular in Seattle. Their engagement sparked the anti-Asian miscegenation laws, made headlines across the US, provoked public outrage, death threats and resulted in the loss of Ms. Emery's citizenship.
Performed onstage by grand niece Brenda Aoki Wong and accompanied by Asian Jazz Pioneer Mark Izu, in the exact space where the marriage took place. With story, music and archival photographs, this performance celebrates the 150th Anniversary of historic Trinity Episcopal Parish. Aoki follows the lovers and their descendents for three generations, exploring the legacy of shame as well as the ultimate triumph of love, over one hundred years later.
