VOW OF SILENCE Screening @ Carriers of the Funk Film Fest
Jade, a heartbroken composer takes a vow of silence to win back the heart of her true love. In her struggle to reconnect with her ex, she meets an outgoing musician. Utilizing music, magic and silence, Jade finds her voice in the place she least expects it. Vow of Silence is a music driven story, placing queer women of color at the center of the narrative. In her inability to speak Jade communicates her pain, weakness, power and joy through music. Narrating Jade's journey is an original score by the filmmaker Be Steadwell.
Be Steadwell is a singer songwriter from Washington DC composes a soulful blend of jazz, acapella and folk into what she calls "queerpop".
Be Steadwell is a singer songwriter from Washington DC. Redefining the love song in a modern context, Be's lyrics focus on love and resistance between women. With roots in jazz, acapella and folk, Be composes a soulful blend of genres into what she calls "queerpop". In her live performances, she utilizes loop pedal vocal layering and beat boxing to compose her songs on stage. As she pursued her career in music, she began a career in film. Shooting and editing her own music videos, Be combined her love of music with narrative film. In 2014, Be completed an MFA in film from Howard University
This screening is hosted and presented by Veuxdo Child Films as a part of the Carriers of the Funk Film Festival, which spans the month of June 2015 and held at Shop Maater in downtown Oakland.
The film will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, singer songwriter and "queerpop" musician Be Steadwell! Not to be missed!
