Benefit Concert: Johnny Peña Classical Guitar Recital
Johnny Peña will perform guitar music from Mexico, Spain, Cuba, Germany, and the United States. The money raised at this recital will be used to cover some of Johnny's wife's (Jenny Peña) owed school tuition from Fall 2014, and it will also fund a trip to a guitar competition that he will be attending at the end of June. This concert will also help Johnny prepare his competition music for the GFA International Concert Artist Competition (ICAC) held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 22, 2015.

Who is Johnny Peña?

Johnny has a Bachelor of Music Degree in Guitar Performance from Texas A & M International University under the instruction of Dr. Gilberto Soto and a Master of Music Degree in Guitar Performance from The University of Texas at San Antonio under the direction of Dr. Matthew Dunne. He was a semi-finalist in the 11th and 14th Annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival. He has had master classes with Xuefei Yang, Fabio Montomoli, Isaac Bustos, Bill Kannengiser (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet) and Alexis Muzurakis (Duo Melis).

Johnny Peña was born in Laredo, TX in 1989. He also enjoys teaching and is a dedicated teacher at various group guitar outreach programs in San Antonio. During his studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio he was awarded an assistantship, which gave him the role of lead guitar teacher for the UTSA String Project at the downtown campus. The UTSA String Project is a member of The National String Project Consortium, which was created in 1998 by the American String Teachers Association to help alleviate the string teacher shortage and to promote string education in public schools. He also teaches at the Carver Community Center and IDEA Carver.

When Johnny is not teaching or working on solo guitar music, he enjoys playing violin and guitar duos with his wife, Jennifer Peña.
