SUMC Summer Theatre's Production of Into the Woods
Into the Woods, the Tony award winning musical written by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, is a masterfully woven collection of four familiar Grimm's Fairy Tales. The story follows a Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to attend the King's Festival, Little Red Riding Hood who wishes to get to Grandmother's house, Rapunzel who wishes to escape her tower and experience the world, and Jack who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. There are many humorous and also poignant moments as the character's paths cross in the woods. By the end of Act I, everyone's wish is eventually granted. In Act II, the consequences of their actions in Act I return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
Disclaimer: Because the nature of fairy tales can sometimes be frightening to children and because Act II deals with more serious life issues, the Stewartstown Summer Theatre offers the following options for children:
Parents who choose to bring their children to a performance should choose seats in the back three rows (raised seating) or first two rows as there will be no separate children's seats in the front. This will allow parents to sit with their children and for children to clearly see the stage.
Parents, who wish for their children to see only Act I, are welcome to use the free childcare provided at the church during Act II only. The church nursery and toddler rooms will be staffed by safe sanctuary approved adults at each performance.The Stewartstown Summer Theatre has a broad reputation for excellence. The cast and crew will feature over one hundred youth from Southern York County and northern Maryland. All seats for the 12 performances are assigned seating.
