DAVID ENLOW CD RELEASE - N.P. MANDER ORGAN RECITAL - Sacred Music in a Sacred Space
David Enlow presents a program of all J.S. Bach to celebrate the release of his new CD entitled Bach on Park Avenue. The CD was recorded on St. Ignatius Loyolas N.P. Mander Organ, the largest tracker-action pipe organ in the New York metropolitan area.
The N.P. Mander organ at 5,000 pipes, 30 tons, and 45 feet high is the largest tracker-action pipe organ in the New York metropolitan area. All N.P. Mander Organ Recitals feature large-screen projection, offering the audience a rare view of the organist at work.
New York organist David Enlow, twice a graduate and a current faculty member of The Juilliard School, and a welcome performer in Germany and Austria, brings his "immense virtuosity" (Stuttgarter Zeitung) to the interpretation of famous Bach masterpieces including the Prelude and Fugue in E-flat, BWV 552 (St. Anne), the Fuga alla Giga (Gigue Fugue), BWV 577, and lesser-known gems like the Pastorale, BWV 590, and the Prelude and Fugue in A Major, BWV 536. These works and more are the subject of a new recording of St. Ignatius' organ by Mr. Enlow on the Pro Organo label, for which the recital is the official release.
At the time of his death and until much later on, Johann Sebastian Bach was renowned chiefly as a virtuoso organist and master of keyboard instruments, not as the great composer of his time. His reputation rested in part on the many organ pieces he composed in Weimar, before the larger musical forces he commanded at Leipzig allowed and required him to conceive larger-scale works. Often a consultant on the building of new organs and the organs' inaugural recitalist, Bach played his own virtuosic organ music all across his region.
To understand the genius of Bach, it is important to consider the works he left for his own primary instrument, the organ. His organ works are both the foundation of the great organ repertoire, a repertoire larger than that of any other instrument, and also its pinnacle and cornerstone.
The N. P. Mander organ at St. Ignatius Loyola is a joy to hear in many schools of organ repertoire, but it is a particularly good Bach organ, especially for one so versatile. With mechanical action (a direct mechanical connection between the keyboards and the valve under each pipe, a feature of the organs of Bach's time which many consider necessary for his music), many stops of which Bach would be proud, and sufficient size to handle any organ piece, St. Ignatius' organ is a Bach powerhouse.
