Miserere mei Deus (Lord have mercy)
"Miserere": Spanish Baroque Sacred Cantatas by José de Nebra (1792-1768), featuring his Miserere for two sopranos, two violins, cello and organ and "Escala de la Gloria" (The Path to Glory) as well as his contemporary Juan Manuel de la Puente's (1692-1753) cantata "De una Beldad Soberana (of Sovereign beauty)". Nebra was an organist and wrote most of his sacred works for the Royal Chapel in Madrid dedicated to "el santísimo" (the holy one). Cantatas were musical pieces in which the voice is the protagonist as opposed to Sonatas which were instrumental pieces. The tradition of devotional cantatas with accompaniment instruments such as the harpsichord, organ or even plucked instruments, dedicated to Jesus Christ and God in secular language goes back to the 1500. By Nebra's time these pieces were performed with a bass obligato and concerted instruments such as recorders and violins, and were accepted in church settings due to their sacred content. El Fuego Early Music Ensemble lead by Venezuelan native Salomé Sandoval (voice, archlute and baroque guitar), researches and performs music from Spanish and new colonies of the Renaissance and Baroque with emphasis on vocal and stage music. For this evening's concert Salome will sing and self-accompany with archlute and baroque guitar (both distant relatives of the modern guitar). Active in Boston since 2011, El Fuego Early Music Ensemble welcomes its new members Allison Willet and Matvey Lapin, baroque violins and St. Paul's music director Jackie Nappi, organ and harpsichord. March Saturday 28th 6:00 pm. At Chapel of the Cross, 304 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27517. $20 General audience, $10 senior discount, $5 students with ID. A 30 min. Lecture at 5pm about the Iconography of Christ at the Cross in Spanish Baroque paintings; open to the public.
