Event
The Guadagnini Quartet with Gilles Colliard
The Open String invites you to enjoy deeply engaging quartet music played up close by violin virtuosos in a gorgeous artist loft at a former Brewery complex in the Mission district in San Francisco. All proceeds from this event benefit youth orchestras and young musicians in developing areas who need string instruments and maintenance. We provide these directly to vetted recipients through our organization on a project-by-project basis.
This is a unique event for up to 50 attending guests in an intimate salon atmosphere that brings together Baroque sensitivity with Bohemian flair at the heart of San Francisco's tech epicenter.
Gilles Colliard, French violin soloist and conductor of the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra, will be accompanied by several members of the San Francisco symphony orchestra, including cellist Amos Yang, as they perform the following masterpieces:
Quartett in C by Haydn (Opus 54) Quartett in A minor by Cherubini
Through a few solo pieces, the musicians will also personally showcase the Guadagnini Quartet, a unique set of instruments crafted by modern violinmaker and The Open String founder Robert Brewer Young, who will give a brief presentation of our mission and our work.
There will be seating, a cash bar, and fine chocolates.
Friday, March 6, 8:30pm (Doors open at 8pm, event ends at 10pm)
The venue is a private loft home in a light industrial zone in the Mission district located at 1 Enterprise Street, San Francisco, a not-so-small alley off Folsom near 16th street. The gray 3-story building has crenalations like a medieval castle and the loft is on the top floor.
FAQs
>>> Isn't classical music boring? Why are you doing this to me?
At our events, some people are moved to tears by the intense and soulful sound of string music played live by top notch musicians in an intimate space. Others float out of the event in a state of bliss. Listening to chamber music the way it was meant to be heard - up close and shared in private - can be an electrifying, life-changing experience, one that many composers strive to produce, not unlike today's DJ working a crowd of dancers into collective ecstasy. The Open String can signal the gift of classical music to those who don't know what they're missing. Most recipients of our program support are children in underserved areas, developing nations, or conflict zones, even, who play in youth orchestras because it provides them safety, structure, relief, serenity, hope, purpose, but also just plain joy where it is otherwise rare to find. And children who play music in groups, especially string instruments, show improved academics, increased test scores, higher community bonds, and decreased violent behavior. So yes, classical music can be boring when it competes with a maelstrom of sexed-up soundbites that excite your reptilian brain. But when you let it come to you, and the slow, complex chord progression turns into a full blown sublime drama between your ears, or when the unbelievable violin solo rips through the air and floods your heart with awe, then you are seeing a human truth about how music can save lives.
>>> OK... So who is this Gilles Colliard?
A soloist, composer, conductor, and teacher, Gilles Colliard is a highly accomplished and "complete" musician who has played in orchestras worldwide since the age of 15. Gilles is visiting California on invitation by The Open Strng and has graciously volunteered to perform this concert for our cause. He will be demonstrating the different tone and color of each of the violins in The Guadagnini Quartet.

>>> Alright, I'm in. How should I dress?
Casual Chic. Nice but not stuffy. Lose the tie, keep the jacket. Put on that smart black dress. Then again, this is creative venue and not a fully formal event. If you came dressed in Lederhosen, that would be fine. Just wear the more fancy ones and not the everyday brewery digs. We want to honor the musicians and the spirit of the music, and it's a tradition to come in style. Please no jeans or shorts. You may be even asked to take off your shoes.
>>> Will there be food? Drinks?
A cash bar will provide a variety of non-alcoholic drinks as well as beer, wine, and champagne. Some light appetizers will be served.
>>> What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The BART station Mission/16th Street is located 2.5 blocks away, as are bus stations. Paid off-street parking is available at the UCSF parking lot across from Enterprise street. Entrance for vehicles is on Shotwell Street. Pedestrians can exit the lot on Folsom and cross the street to Enterprise. Please do NOT park on Enterprise Street. A small number of bicycles can be stored inside the venue. We like to suggest Uber for Lyft for this venue.
>>> Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Please email info@theopenstring.org
>>> Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Yes, but you must notify us in advance.
