Music of Mexico
The Minnesota Global Arts Institute and Hamline University continue their focus on our neighbors to the south, presenting the Twin Cities' oldest and most renowned mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Mi Tierra, on Friday, March 13.
Mariachi Mi Tierra was formed in 2003 by Mr. Rosalia Castro. The 8-man ensemble all hails from the Mexican states of Morelos and Pueblo, known for their mariachi traditions.
A festive, authentically Mexican style of music, with roots in pre-Colonial Spanish musical history, mariachi is played on both stringed and brass instruments. Present-day mariachi ensembles generally include: trumpets, violins, guitar, guitarrón (an oversized guitar that produces a rich bass sound), and vihuela (a high-pitched, round-backed instrument similar to a mandolin). Instead of using separate percussion instruments, mariachis use the guitarrón and the vihuela which then play off of each other to create complex, syncopated rhythms. Many songs are sung in harmony.
This combination of instruments, rhythms, and harmonies creates the characteristic sound of mariachi, but within this general framework there is a great diversity of musical styles. Early mariachi, which developed in Jalisco on the Pacific coast of Mexico, centered around a style known as son. As mariachi became more popular and spread throughout the country, many regional variations were created. Beginning as rapid tempo sones (quick songs) and romånticas (songs about romance), dance songs inspired by European forms, such as waltzes and polkas, were soon added. More recently, the Columbian cumbia dance style has become a popular addition to the repertoire.
The main concert for The Music of Mexico will be held at Sundin Music Hall, Hamline University, 1531 Hewitt Avenue, Saint Paul, MN on Friday, March 13 at 7:30 (free pre-show lecture-demonstration at 7:00). Tickets are by general admission, $12 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for the Hamline/ACTC community. Seating is limited, and advance tickets are available through http://musicofmexico.bpt.me or by calling 651-523-2459. Free parking is widely available in campus lots.
Other residency events include educational lectures and workshops for the university and for Hamline Elementary School. After a summer off, the series will return in the fall with musicians from Haiti and Central America.
The Minnesota Global Arts Institute and Hamline University present the third year of their popular concert and residency series designed to bring world class music and dance traditions to the heart of Saint Paul's Hamline-Midway area. The concerts featured Asian music with "The Sublime and the Beautiful" in 2012-13, and focused on the European tradition in 2013-14 with "Roots Music: Four Corners of Europe."
