Technites Past & Present Talent Showcase
Not a talent show - a Talent Showcase!  You are in for a treat!
Sunday Feb. 8 2-4 Oakland Technical High School 42nd & Broadway in Oakland

Join us for a truly unique event an intergenerational performance by remarkably talented Oakland Tech students and staff, past and present, ages 90 to 15, to celebrate their school's centennial year! An old-fashioned revue featuring song, dance, music and drama, the "Technites Past and Present Talent Showcase" has something for everyone! Marv Tripp, class of 1943, former club performer and bandleader, will sing. Estelle Jung Kelley, Class of 1949, former singer and dancer at the famed Forbidden City night club in San Francisco's Chinatown and later director and choreographer of her own dance troupe, will dance a fan dance to "Sayonara." Michael Grbich, Class of 1950, who tap-danced across the Golden Gate Bridge a few years ago, will tap dance onTech's stage. Omar Shabazz, Class of 1989, former ballet dancer with the Oakland Ballet, will perform a piece he choreographed with a current Tech student who is his pupil at Oakland Ballet School.

Tech's acrobatics club will spin and twirl, its dance class will dance to Afro-Haitian drumming, and its Poly(nesian) Club will dance to island rhythms. Among the current Technite performers are a pianist, a cellist, an opera singer (whom the principal swears sounds just like Paul Robeson), a jazz band called the Pink Panthers, and an alternate rock band called The Empty Minded. And there's more too a scene from an original "verbatim" play about Oakland Tech created by Tech's drama students based on their interviews with alumni. The show is a vivid display of the talent and passion that Tech has nurtured in its students for a century.

The Technites Past and Present Talent Showcase is a fundraiser for Tech's after school peer tutoring program, Boost, which was started twenty years ago by alumni from the 1950s who wanted to mark their 25th reunion by helping their school. Those alumni are turning over sponsorship of the program to the Tech Parent Emeritus Club, a group of parents of recent Tech graduates who want to continue to support the school.

The talent showcase is from 2-4 pm, Sunday, February 8th, in the Oakland Tech High School Auditorium, 4351 Broadway, Oakland (entrance from 42nd Street).
