Music of Brazil
South of the Border: Traditions is a concert and residency series being presented at Hamline University in collaboration with the Minnesota Global Arts Institute and with funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
This is the third year of the series, which featured Asian music with "The Sublime and the Beautiful" in 2012-13, and which focused on the European tradition in 2013-2014 with "Roots Music: Four Corners of Europe."
Now the series picks up a hot, vibrant, Latin American flair. The Music of Brazil will feature a variety of Brazilian artists including a traditional choro trio, a variety of members of Batucade do Norte, other local musicians, and special guests Beira Mar Brasil, a carnival band with dancers and singers.
The main concert for The Music of Brazil, features choro trio Choro Borealis (Robert Everest, Pat O'Keefe, and Tim O'Keefe) , with special guests Tom and Mira Keho (keyboard, flute, and vocals), Patrick Harison (accordion), Laura Harada (violin), and members of Batucada do Norte. It will be Friday, February 13 at Sundin Music Hall, Hamline University, 1531 Hewitt Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104. Seats are by general admission, $12 for adults, $8 for students and $5 for all ACTC students , faculty and staff and will also be available at the door and by phone through the Sundin Music Hall Box Office, 651-523-2459. Brazilian Choro (prounounced "SHOW-doo") music is a blend of European and African influences, similar in many ways to American ragtime and Dixieland jazz. Popular throughout Brazil from the late 1800s-1930s, the style has recently experienced a global rebirth. Choro Borealis local trio Robert Everest, Pat O'Keefe, and Tim O'Keefe all play, compose, and arrange choro, lending it a unique flair.
The full swing of Carnival gets underway the next week, as both groups welcome Beira Mar Brasil straight from Rio de Janiero, with traditional singers, dancers, and masks for this special carnival engagement! The evening begins in the Bush Center Ballroom (2nd floor of the center, adjacent to Sundin Hall), with refreshments, samba lessons, face painting and mask-making at 7:00pm, and leads directly to a full-scale Carnival celebration completely FREE of charge!
