MOTHER FALCON'S MUSIC LAB

We are excited to announce the return of The Mother Falcon Music Lab, a summer music program targeting players of symphonic instruments as well as standard rock band instruments, developed and run by Austin band Mother Falcon.

Itself a product of a high school's orchestra practice rooms, Mother Falcon is seeking to enable new generations of curious musicians to play music off the page. The Lab offers a creative education that enriches and is often overlooked by traditional music instruction.

In this safe and constructive environment, young musicians are encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and discover their own musical voice and passion.

Campers are placed into multi-instrumental bands, within which they learn to listen to their instincts and to one another as they write an original song to be performed at the end of the week.

Around this central experience, campers have a tightly organized schedule of classes, including a hands-on, DIY merchandizing course. Throughout the week, lunchtime performers and a variety of experienced speakers from Austin's music scene offer advice on the music career.

We see our campers as the new generation of music makers who aren't afraid to challenge boundaries, and hope to open new horizons for them to thrive beyond camp.

Enrollment is open to students studying violin, viola, cello, double bass, saxophone, trumpet, piano, drums, and guitar, aged 11- 18.

Daily Courses:

Techniques of sound| The goal of Techniques class is to break down the musical language in order for campers to build their own unique vocabulary. We explore the enormous variety of sounds an instrument can make, and reveal the different types of parts that can contribute to a song.

Covers| The goal of Covers class is to offer perspective on songwriting by stripping a familiar song to it's most basic components. Campers are then challenged to re-create the song in a unique way.

Band Practice| Band practice is where the magic happens. Campers follow their thesis into a world of their own creation, writing an original song that will blow us away at the end of the week.

Aesthetics| The goal of Aesthetics class is to elaborate on the band's thesis as it relates to their image. Campers create their band names and logos, learning affordable DIY techniques to make band merchandise.

Workshops:

We are now offering workshops in which we follow the thesis and it's components into other disciplines and mediums. Our workshops for MFML 2015 are:

+ Photography and Visual Media

Campers explore the visual side of their creativity through photojournalism, social media, and band portraits.

+ Architecture in Music

Campers will design and construct an installation, following the same process they use to write their song.

+ Stage Skills

Campers will learn about the technical side of performance, from gear basics to mic placement and stage management.

+ Creative Writing

Campers will express themselves through prose, learning about the lyrical potential of language and how to articulate their thoughts on music.

*Local talent guest performances and Q&A every lunch!

*All Genres welcome! Folk, pop, hip hop, jazz or anything else, this camp will show you how to fuse your inspirations and skill to find your personal voice as a musician

*Each band will have the opportunity to perform an original song at the end-of-camp showase
