Heaven and Earth (A Summer Sounds Event)
Musical works often strive for the heights of beauty and mysticism, while their composers and performers must confront the joys and pains of remaining earthbound. Three works on this program capture the duality of great musical expression, from the ardor and humanity of Schumann's great Liederkreis, Op. 24 song cycle, through John Hilliard's recent Piano Concerto (commissioned for SMF in 2003), to Mendelssohn's inspired Octet for Strings, which seems almost heaven-sent in its sheer perfection from one still so young.
Performers include Michael Haag (bass); Gabriel Dobner and Carsten Schmidt (piano); Minna Pensola, Anna Gebert, Antti Tikkanen, and Diane Pascal (violin); Vladimir Mendelssohn and Amadi Azikiwe (viola); Carl Danokowski and James Wilson (cello); Tony Manzo (bass); Mary Boodell (flute); Roger Roe (oboe); Janice Minor (clarinet); Ian Zook (horn); Stephanie Corwin (bassoon).
