Bearfoot at the Linen Bldg
Anchorage, Alaska bluegrass band Bearfoot will play at 8 PM on February 9 at the Linen Building, 1402 W Grove St., Boise. This show is all-ages. Beer and Wine available with ID. Opener is the inimitable Bill Coffey.
Bearfoot's rise from uber talented music camp counselors to an award-winning international force has been nothing short of meteoric. In 2009 they released their Compass Records debut Doors and Windows. The album quickly rose to number one on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart. In 2009 they were also nominated as Emerging Artist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. But the story doesn't begin there.
Bearfoot originally got together as students at music camps in Alaska when the youngest was just 14. Amazingly, for such a young band, they became regular crowd favorites at prestigious festivals including Wintergrass, Grey Fox, Strawberry Festival, and seven consecutive years at RockyGrass. In 2001, the band gained notoriety by winning the Telluride Bluegrass band contest, joining the prestigious ranks of previous winners Dixie Chicks and Nickel Creek.
Here's what other's have had to say about Bearfoot: "Bearfoot is an egalitarian sort of band with a taste for switching things up. Mournful ballads give way to folksy three-part harmonies, which in turn make room for romping, bluegrass-instrumentals." (The Boston Globe)
"Prodigious musical prowess is matched with an obvious collective spirit of adventurousness, which is perhaps surpassed only by the shining, soaring harmonies." (Popmatters.com)
"[Doors and Windows] bounces, it swings, it dives head-first into minor keys and unexpected (but totally workable) phrasings. In other words, it's very cool." (Bluegrass Unlimited)
Made up of Kate Hamre on acoustic bass, Odessa Jorgensen on fiddle, Mike Mickelson on guitar, Jason Norris on mandolin, and Angela Oudean on fiddle - everyone sings - Bearfoot is band to seek out live! Incidentally, the band filled the Nampa Civic Center in 2009 and in the summer of 2009, graced the Music from Stanley stage at Redfish Lake.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, January 11, and are available in person at the Record Exchange or at brownpapertickets.com. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 day of show. This show is all-ages.
