Mateo lives in a rural community in southern Mexico with his mother and younger brother. His father moved to Los Angeles supposedly to better provide for the family but hasn't been heard from in a while. Mateo, now 17, is expected to migrate to Los Angeles so he joins a gang to have their support once he gets there. But, to be accepted by them, he is expected to commit murder and there are rumors of violent pressure being exerted on young gang members in Los Ángeles. As Mateo begins to regret his decision and senses the danger awaiting him in L.A., he sees his village with new eyes, developing a sweet sense of melancholy for his surroundings and an appreciation for its way of life. The older villagers still hold on to their ancient values, maintaining their roots, with each supporting the other in their own way.
