Chicago Choral Artists - Sacred Music From Great Britain: MacMillan's Mass and More
For his inaugural concert set as Artistic Director, Michael D. Costello has chosen a program titled Sacred Music from Great Britain: MacMillan's Mass and More, with a cappella works and pieces for choir and organ from the sixteenth to twenty-first centuries.
James MacMillan's Mass (2013 edition with the revised English translation of the liturgy) for choir and organ will be the focal point of the program. Repertoire will also include traditional Anglican chants from the Book of Common Prayer paired with through-composed anthems for choir and organ set to the same Psalms.
Anthems include festive, celebratory classics of the Anglican liturgical tradition: Parry's I Was Glad, composed for the 1902 coronation of King Edward VII and performed at subsequent coronations, and Mathias's Let the People Praise Thee, O God, written for the 1981 wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Works by Stanford, Howells, Tallis, and Morley round out the program.
Eric Budzynski, Organist and Music Associate of Northwestern University's Alice Millar Chapel, Evanston, IL, will accompany Chicago Choral Artists on the church's restored 1925 Skinner Organ (http://firstumcoakpark.org/music-organ/organ/).
