Avenues - Cine+Mas San Francisco Latino Film Festival
Director Aaref Rodriguez
USA / 2014 / Drama / 88 mins / English and Spanish with English subtitles
San Francisco Premiere
Saul Sanchez returns home to the rough Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park, also known as The Avenues, after serving a decade-long prison sentence. Under the guidance of a sympathetic parole officer, he seeks a reunion with his estranged young daughterall amid suffocating pressure to return to his all-too-familiar gangland familia. Featuring breakthrough performances by Hector Atreyu Ruiz (Death Sentence, Splinter) and Tracey Heggins (Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Medicine for Melancholy, LUV) "Avenues" tackles the isolation felt by former convicts while showcasing a man's personal journey of fatherhood and quest for self-discovery.
South American Cho-Low Director: Phuong-Cac Nguyen Brazil/ Documentary/ 16 min/ English San Francisco Bay Area Premiere
South American Cho-Low is a short documentary that examines São Paulo's fascinating cultura chicana, the Portuguese name given to the scene inspired by Los Angeles lowrider and gang culture. The film features interviews with major personalities and icons from the movement such as Estevan Oriol, Duel, Alemão, Luiz Gordo, Mariana de Paula Martins and Leandro Vinicius Pimenta Cabellos, who take viewers through the world of lowriders, tattoos, religion and style as they recount why they're so passionate about culture chicana and why they relate so much to those living the life in East Los Angeles. "South American Cholo" shows that despite the violence associated with gang culture, the Brazilian interpretation provokes the deeper question of what it means to truly be a cholo and still maintain a Brazilian identity.
