Concert #1: Sweeping Horizons

Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sea Symphony
Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 3pm
Sanders Theatre, 45 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA

Our 39th season sets sail with a rare treat: Vaughan Williams' magnificent Sea Symphony, a concert that also marks David Carrier's 35th anniversary as Music Director of NCS. This bold choral and orchestral symphony solidified the composer's reputation when it premiered in 1910. Inspired by the humanistic vision of Walt Whitman, Vaughan Williams selected texts from several of Whitman's poems, using the sea and sailors as a metaphor for the voyage of the soul through life. This expansive work took six years and many revisions, but was quickly recognized as a work of striking originality and an important addition to the choral repertoire.

Enjoy free parking at the Broadway Garage, one block from Sanders Theatre on Felton Street.

Soloists: Kim Leeds, Soprano; Philip Lima, Baritone

Concert #2: Sacred Visions

Jean Langlais, Messe Solonelle
Sunday, March 17, 2015 at 3 pm
The Second Church in Newton, 60 Highland Street, West Newton, MA

Stir your late-winter soul with an afternoon of glorious music for church and synagogue, anchored by Jean Langlais' Messe Solonelle. Blind from childhood, Langlais was an influential 20th century organist and composer in Paris. The Messe Solonelle is unquestionably his finest piece of church musicand has been out of print for decades until recently. The program also features the celebrated Collegium Regale Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis of Herbert Howells, along with spirituals and inspiring sacred works by 19th and 20th century composers including Johannes Brahms, Max Janowski (Hashkiveinu), Simon Sargon (Psalm 135), and Charles Villiers Stanford.

Ross Wood, organist

Concert #3: Blooming in Boston

Daniel Pinkham, Garden Party
Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 8 pm
Church of the Holy Name, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA

We salute Boston's preeminence as a flourishing music center with a program devoted to local composers. Central works include Garden Party, by Daniel Pinkham and Narcissus, by James Woodman. Garden Party, a comic opera, offers a decidedly whimsical and irreverent take on Adam and Eve's banishment from the Garden of Eden. Narcissus, commissioned by the Newton Choral Society in 1995, tells the ancient Greek myth of the beautiful youth who becomes spellbound by his own reflection. Also on the program are works by Carson Cooman set to poems by beloved writers: Eros, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and The Choir Invisible, by George Eliot.

Soloists: Susan Consoli, Soprano; Thomas Jones, Baritone

Mark Feldhusen, Pianist

Newton Choral Society has become one of Boston's most esteemed choral groups since its founding in 1976. NCS has been privileged to appear with the Boston Pops and the Boston Philharmonic and to perform at Carnegie Hall and Symphony Hall.
