J.S. Bach: Easter & Ascension Oratorios
Among the great glories of religious music are Bach's Easter and Ascension oratorios. In collaboration with The Bach Festival of Philadelphia's Bach Collegium Orchestra and outstanding soloists, Choral Arts presents authentic performances of these powerful works. Kommt, eilet und laufet, the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), was performed on April 1, 1725 as a cantata, and revised as an oratorio around 1738. It has 11 movements with Simon Peters words sung by the tenor soloist, and John the Apostles by the bass. Lobet Gott in Seinen Reichen, the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11), also features 11 movements and was first performed on May 19, 1735. It celebrates the Ascension of Christ into heaven, which in many Christian churches is celebrated on the fortieth day after Easter.
