Mozart's Solemn Vespers | New Mexico Symphonic Chorus & Orchestra
Join the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus and Orchestra for its season opener at First United Methodist Church.

Britten, Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, Op. 31
Mozart, Solemn Vespers, KV 339

Roger Melone, conductor
Jonathan Tay, tenor
Nathan Ukens, horn

Benjamin Britten's sublime song cycle, is dedicated
to tenor (and Britten's life partner) Peter Pears, and
legendary horn player Dennis Brain. Each movement is
memorable, framing six poems drawn from literature of
the 15th through nineteenth centuries, by beloved
poets including Tennyson, Blake, and Keats. A string
orchestra accompanies the soloists.

Solemn Vespers was probably Mozart's final composition
for the Salzburg Cathedral in 1780, before leaving his
hometown in search of greater artistic opportunities in
Vienna. Mozart uses energetic rhythms, a bold harmonic
palette, inner vocal lines full of musical interest, and
sparkling instrumentals in what is a true high point of his
creativity in the choral repertoire.
