A Flamenco Tap Happening! Presented by Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre
Join New Jersey's premier Spanish Dance & Flamenco dance company, the widely acclaimed Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre, on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 7:30 pm at Crossroads Theatre (7 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901) for the premiere of "A Flamenco Tap Happening".
In collaboration with two exciting stars of the New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble, (Maurice Chestnut and Karen Callaway Williams), Alborada will take you on a vibrant, historical dance/music journey in 1929, when Spanish Poet Laureate Federico GarcĂa Lorca visited New York's Harlem and wrote a poem entitled "The King Of Harlem", exploring the search for identity of African Americans and the Spanish Gypsies at this time in history. Here, you will experience the cultural similarities and the communal rhythmic patterns and language involved in Flamenco and American Tap dance.
Highlighting the production is also a fusion piece involving Tap dancing accompanied by Flamenco guitar and Flamenco dancing performed to Swing music, a lovely period piece of dance and song from Madrid, as well as exuberant Gypsy flamenco, Spanish dances and Tap dances.
Experience the passion of Spanish Dance Theatre and this percussive explosion between Flamenco and Tap dance with live music and song!
Crossroads Theatre is made available through the generosity of Johnson & Johnson, Inc., Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission/Board of Chosen Freeholders and the New Brunswick Cultural Center.
This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts, through a grant provided by the Middlesex County Cultural & Heritage Commission/Board of Chosen Freeholders.
