Sylvia's Story: Less than a year ago, Sylvia's son Brandon, a 17 year old senior at Oregon City Senior High School (OCHS),was a healthy and active teenager playing football and performing in the OCHS Marching Band. During the spring of 2013, Brandon was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He received chemotherapy and radiation to fight the cancer. Throughout treatments, Sylvia was by Brandon's side, taking him to appointments and working to ensure he received the care he needed. Throughout Brandon's fight, Sylvia worked full time at a local Fred Meyer store. She also continued to server on the Booster committee for the OCHS Band program, managing the uniforms for 100+ marchers, and helping to ensure that the award-winning marching band looked their best. Over New Year 2014, Sylvia traveled to Florida with her band, as a chaperone and to keep them looking their uniformed best.
In January 2014, Sylvia became suddenly gravely ill with Purpura Fulminians, a very rare disease most commonly found in infants. the illness causes sepsis, which in turn caused circulation in Sylvia's extremities to cease, killing that tissue. In the weeks that followed, Sylvia underwent 6 surgeries resulting in the amputation of both her feet, her left hand, and a portion of her right index finger. Treatments to these and other affected areas was physically painful, to say nothing of the emotional toll of becoming a quad amputee in a matter of days. During her treatment at the Legacy Oregon Burn Center, and now in the Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon, Sylvia consistently shows an incredible wealth of spirit, always smiling and ensuring her constant visitors that she is going to be okay. Her friends have deemed her a Warrior.
