RICK BERLIN AND THE NICKEL AND DIME BAND
$10 advance / $10 at the door
8:30 doors / 9:30 show
An amazing combination of bands, music and musicians tonight centered by three wily veterans of the Boston music scene; Chandler Travis, Rick Berlin and Shaun Wolf Wortis. Together they share a love of the absurd, a ton of creative wit and a deep abiding commitment to the flame of rock'n'roll.
If there weren't so many crap noisy bands around, and so few good ones, there's a chance the Catbirds wouldn't need to exist; on the other hand, they'd still probably need to be making some contribution to the general din, just out of sheer orneriness. If Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga had quadruplets, except somehow they ended up being kind of musical in addition to being rather large and rubbery, and it happened about 50 or 60 years ago, well, presto! -the Catbirds.
Gato Malo on June 9 2006 at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA. What's Gato Malo? Fronted by Boston-basedShaun Wolf Wortis on guitar and vocals, Gato Malo is an R&B, soul and roots rock smörgåsbord featuring an ever-changing line-up of truly splendid musicians.
RICK BERNIN AND THE NICKEL AND DIME BAND
"Rick Berlin is a giant on the Boston music scene. His colorful songwriting and strong stage presence have influenced countless other artists since the early 1970s, when
his innovative band Orchestra Luna was on Epic Records and harnessed a potent blend of theater and music years before the Tubes. Throughout the decades and the shifting fortunes of the business Rick has continued to make music with intelligence and integrity, building an international rep- utation around his knotty, singular piano playing, straight-from-the-heart singing and a style of character-based songwrit- ing that's drawn favorable comparisons to the likes of Tom Waits and Leonard Co- hen - although Rick rocks more than both. His most recent band, the Shelley Winters Project, recently split after two terrific CDs, but Rick's still busy creating. He recently (2004) completed a new solo album, Me & Van Gogh, at Hi-N-Dry Studio with Billy Conway (Morphine) producing. He fol- lowed this (2006) with Old Stag (2008) - solo piano plus string quartet (arranged by Brendan Cooney who writes string parts for Buried Beds and Dr. Dog). Then Paper Airplane (2010) produced by Rick and Dennis Brennan. Always On Insane (2012) is with a full, intense 8-piece band." -Ted Drozkowski, The Boston Phoenix
