The Rape of Lucretia
In a second chapter celebrating the music of Benjamin Britten, the GMOF Emerging Artist production of The Rape of Lucretia explores the composer's incredibly diverse approach to chamber opera. Inspired by semi historical Roman tragedy, André Obey's play Le Viol de Lucrèce provides the source material for Britten's close collaboration with librettist Ronald Duncan. The result is a tightly focused work that is explosive and emotionally intense.
The Emerging Artist program has developed a national profile over seven seasons and this year promises to surpass itself again. An expanded chamber orchestra and newly configured venue (Sugarbush Gate House) brings the production figuratively and literally into its own light, with one performance (June 19) anticipating summer solstice. Last year's production played brilliantly to a sold out audience. Get tickets in advance to avoid disappointment!

Sponsored by the Green Mountain Cultural Center [non-profit 501(c)(3)], and supported in part by grants from the Vermont Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts - Art Works, the festival presents professional opera at the historic Barre Opera House, venues in the Mad River Valley, and beyond. Events in Central and Northern Vermont are enjoyed by local and regional visitors alike. Audiences greet performances with warmth and enthusiasm, and collectively laud this artistic gem based in the Mad River Valley.
