Handel's Messiah
Start your Holiday Season with the Exciting Handel's Messiah
This December, join the Easton Choral Society and the mid-shore community as they inaugurate the holiday season with Georg Friedrich Handel's all-time classic, Messiah. Performances will take place at the Talbot County Auditorium on the campus of Easton High School located at 723 Mecklenburg Avenue in Easton on Saturday December 7 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m. This annual tradition began several years ago and now attracts an audience from as far away as parts of northern Virginia and the state of Delaware. Recognized for its superb musical preparation and vitality, the choral society will be joined by a distinguished company of soloists including soprano Georgiann Gibson, mezzo-soprano Kristen Dubenion-Smith, tenor Joshua Baumgardner, and bass Antony Zwerdling. The performance will be conducted by Artistic Director, Wes Lockfaw and will conclude with a carol sing-a-long.
Handel's beloved oratorio, which premiered in Dublin in 1742, combines Old and New Testament texts concerning prophecies of a Messiah, or savior. One of the most frequently performed of all musical compositions, over the years it has become an integral part of the Christmas and winter holiday season. The oratorio is divided into three parts. In addition to the Christmas portion, the Easton Choral Arts Society will perform selections from parts two and three, including "Hallelujah Chorus," "The Trumpet Shall Sound," and "Worthy is the Lamb." "The "Hallelujah Chorus" is a crowd favorite" says Artistic Director Wes Lockfaw.
"For many people Messiah is an annual tradition and they will go quite a distance to hear a live performance of the popular oratorio. "I am very excited to be performing Messiah, and pleased that this performance has become an annual Eastern Shore tradition," says Lockfaw.
Tickets are $20 General Admission and $5 for Students and may be purchased through our website EastonChoralArts.org, by calling 410-200-0498 or through chorus members. Easton Choral Arts Society, Inc. is sponsored in part by the Talbot County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council.
