Let Freedom Ring Tour - Placerville Performance
For Veteran's Day, Camerata California Chamber Choir and the VITA Chamber Orchestra bring to Placerville's Edwin Markham School the program that resounded to critical acclaim in Sacramento last Memorial Day.
"Thus concluded what seemed more of an event than a concert; a lavish production with fresh, interesting music professionally performed throughout and a worthy tribute to our sixteenth President." - Sacramento Choral Calendar
The featured work, George Frederick McKay's Lincoln Lyrics, is a choral cantata depicting scenes from Lincoln's life. Popular in the 1940's, it faded from the repertoire during the experimentalist 50s and 60s. No recording of this American masterpiece exists, and last May's Sacramento performance was the first in some 60 years.
"Lincoln Lyrics" was an even more delightful, even inspiring, experience . . . an uplifting and beautiful tribute to Lincoln that earned a rare mid-concert standing ovation." - Sacramento Choral Calendar
The piece is built on the ode Lincoln Lyrics by Edwin Markham, who taught school in El Dorado County in the 1870s before acquiring acclaim as the poet of The Man and the Hoe and Lincoln, Man of the People - which was selected to be read at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial.
The program also features Vaughan Williams' Toward the Unknown Region (on Civil War era poetry of Walt Whitman) plus patriotic favorites!
