Comas
Bringing together piper Isaac Alderson, fiddler Aidan Burke, guitar/cittern player Aidan Burke, and percussionist Jackie Moran, COMAS are a band firmly rooted in Irish music, but with enough space to allow for original compositions. Their openness to new influences and a respectful eye on the past bring Comas to the forefront of what traditional music is about today.
Since March 2003, Comas have been together as a band. Before that, they toured individually in top acts such as The Drovers, Orion, Eileen Ivers, Urbantrad, Denez Prigent, and the internationally acclaimed Liz Carroll, to name just a few. Although coming from diverse musical backgrounds and residing in different parts of the globe, they found each other through their similar approach to music, bringing together their many cultural influences to forge a unique blend of traditional Irish music that literally had them, within months of coming together, playing in major festivals in Ireland, Belgium, France, England, Denmark, and Holland. This achivement alone is worthy of note, and as further testimony to their deep rooted talents, they were asked back immediately to every festival they played. "Before we even had time to put our instruments away," as guitarist Philip Masure aptly put it.
The Burren Backroom series launched in October of 2011 but has already created many memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was created by well-known traditional musicians Tommy and Louise McCarthy in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts. DeDanann, Dervish, Teada, The Teetotalers, Lunasa, Robbie O'Connell, Sean Tyrrell, the list is building and building, and the radio recordings have become a feature of the weekly Celtic Sojourn radio broadcasts. A series of CDs "Live from the Backroom" is being planned.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. Regularly, there are "openers" artists presenting three or four pieces often in contrast to the "main" offering. This has seen some spectacular new and often unexpected talent being presented on stage.
Tickets are $23 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.
Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!
