CONCERT I: OPEN FORM
November 22  8 PM @ The Chapel in the Good Shepherd Center

Earle Brown - Event: Synergy II (1967)
Tom Baker - Shendos No. 12 (2013) commissioned by SMO  World Premiere
Sylvano Bussotti - Coeur Pour Batteur for percussion solo (1959)
Karlheinz Stockhausen  Zyklus for percussion solo (1959)
featuring percussionist Bonnie Whiting Smith

A night of exploration in musical pluralism with the Open Form. This concert features music that allows the performers to change the form at each reading, which means that no two performances are ever the same! Works by Earle Brown, Sylvano Bussotti, a rare performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Zyklus by percussionist Bonnie Whiting Smith, and a World Premiere by Seattle composer Tom Baker commissioned by SMO.

CONCERT II: 21ST CENTURY CELLO!
Februray 21  8 PM @ The Chapel in the Good Shepherd Center

Jonathan Harvey  Ricercare una melodia for cello and electronics (1984)
Jérémy Jolley - New Work for cello and six wind instruments (2013)  World Premiere
Jonathan Harvey  Chant for cello solo (1994)
Rebecca Saunders  IRE, concerto of violoncello, strings and percussion (2012) - US Premiere

The cello's long history and repertoire is on-going with today's latest musical discoveries and expressiveness! SMO is pleased to introduce French Cellist extraordinaire Séverine Ballon to Seattle, who will perform contemporary works by quintessential composers of our century in back to back concerts. Join us to discover the cello's new identity in the 21st century performed by one of the world's most innovative performers!

Concert III: MUSICAL COMMENTARIES
June 13  8 PM @ The Chapel in the Good Shepherd Center

Earle Brown - Tracking Pierrot (1992)
Joël-François Durand - Tombeau de Rameau II, for piano solo (2013)
featuring pianist Cristina Valdes
Franco Donatoni - Tema for ensemble (1981)

A concert of Music on Music! The best way a composer can pay tribute, comment or criticize a piece is to write another piece of music in response. SMO will present three composers that have entered in dialogue with another composer's work: Earle Brown's Tracking Pierrot  a tribute to Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, op. 21, UW Faculty member Joël-François Durand's Tombeau de Rameau II  a deformation/expansion of Rameau's Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts, and Franco Donatoni's Tema, in which he pushes further a work of his own, Ruisseau dans l'escalier.
