It is, historically speaking, a modern opera - employing rock instrumentation, special effects lighting, and an upbeat ensemble. However, thematically, the story is one of the timeless struggle of humans, good at heart and well-intentioned, to resist falling for ploys and schemes that seem too good to be true. Because in the end, we all want to be successful, and must be careful by which rubric we measure success. In this cautionary play, our un-hero falls prey to just such a scam, and winds up losing everything (yes, including his soul).
Christoph Whitbeck has been writing all manner of songs since about 2002, and his passionate acoustic performances have captivated audiences, turning friends into fans and vice-versa. He finished writing The Devil Plays Poker in 2009, but only recently began plans to put it onstage for Halloween 2013, complete with a full band, interpretive artworks, and special effects lighting.
It's gonna be one hell of a show.
