Imagining a New Framework for Sexual Health: Redefining Sexuality Post-Trauma
Podell Auditorium at the Bernstein Pavilion (First Floor)
New York, NY

Conversations about "where babies come from?" remain one of the most difficult for parents to have with their children. Discussions between adults about sex are too often awkward, and even considered an impolite topic. The fact is that we in the United States rarely talk about sex except when something bad happens, like an STD, an unwanted pregnancy or worse a sexual assault. By extension then, these conversations focus on abstinence, protection, or recovery from trauma, and we rarely talk about sexual pleasure or sexual health. When professionals only discuss sex after a negative or harmful sexual health outcome their interventions function like a cast that mends a broken leg bone; but when do health care professionals ever discuss sex in a way that helps us walk again, or even run?

The BI-SLR HEARTS program has invited Douglas Braun-Harvey and Al Killen-Harvey from The Harvey Institute to deliver a workshop on how to talk about sex in a comprehensive way that both helps a person heal from sexual trauma and promotes sexual health. We believe that for anyone to really help another person recover from a sexual trauma, the conversation must include content about how to have a healthy and fulfilling relationship to our own sexuality.

This workshop will be held at Beth Israel Medical Center on November 22nd, 2013. The morning program (9am-1pm) will be a large-scale lecture on how therapists working with survivors of sexual assault can integrate sexual health principles into clinical best practices.  The afternoon program (2pm-5pm) will be small group training for practicing clinicians on integrating sexual health principles into their therapeutic work.

There are TWO SESSIONS:
9am-1pm: Large-scale lecture
2pm-5pm: Small group, intensive clinical discussion and practice

**Breakfast and coffee will be provided in the morning.

**Continuing Education Credits will be available (APA, NASW and AASECT). To obtain these credits please purchase the CE credit ticket option. For more information, see below:
