Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Old Time Musketry
The varying instrumentation gives the band the ability to sound like a jazz quartet one minute, and a village folk ensemble the next. Instrumentation includes accordion, piano, saxophone, clarinet, electric keyboards, bass, and drums (featuring a classic marching bass drum). Old Time Musketry presents a joyous music that draws from the exuberant spirit of jazz, the poignant melodies and soulful grooves of rock and folk music, the energy and spontaneity of free improvisation, and a willfully experimental attitude towards combining these elements into a unique vision of American music. Old Time Musketry joined forces in early 2009 in Brooklyn and has been developing their unique sound by performing widely in the New York area and around the Northeast and Midwest. In 2012, Old Time Musketry released its debut album "Different Times," the inaugural release of the newly launched SteepleChase LookOut imprint. Since then, the album has been getting rave reviews, including a 4-star review in DownBeat Magazine and several "Best Debut of 2012"mentions. After honing their new material on the road, the group intends to record a second album. Individually, the members of Old Time Musketry (saxophonist/clarinetist Adam Schneit, piano/ accordionist JP Schegelmilch, bassist Phil Rowan, and drummer Max Goldman) have performed with many of the most creative players on the New York jazz and improvised music scene, including Tim Berne, Oscar Noriega, Loren Stillman, Drew Gress, Eivind Opsvik, Jacob Sacks, George Schuller, Jeremy Udden, and Josh Sinton, and have contributed their voices to projects covering an aesthetically broad range from singer-songwriters to rock bands to electro pop groups.
