Priester's Cue; Hadley Caliman Quartet

Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center
Seattle, WA

For over half a century Julian Priester has worked in a broad range of musical settings with artists as diverse as Muddy Waters, Herbie Hancock, and Sun Ra. The trombone legend, accompanied by pianist Dawn Clement, drummer Byron Vannoy, and bassist Geoff Harper, continues our special collaboration with the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center. In Deep End Dance, Priester's first album as a leader in 25 years, was named the 2002 Earshot Jazz Record of the Year. An influential educator, Priester has taught at the Cornish College of the Arts since 1979.

Sharing the bill with Priester's Cue is the tenor saxophone great Hadley Caliman and his quartet. Caliman may not be a household name, but there's no reason for that based on his musical accomplishments. Growing up in Los Angeles, Caliman studied with Dexter Gordon and played gigs on Central Ave in LA during the 1950s. The list of artists Caliman has played with is a "who's who" of jazz and includes Gerald Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, and Jon Hendricks. Caliman taught at the Cornish College of the Arts for over 20 years and is currently a member of the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. His latest album, Gratitude, featuring trumpeter Thomas Marriott, vibraphonist Joe Locke, bassist Phil Sparks, and drummer Joe La Barbera, was recently released on Origin Records.
