Matthias Weckmann was born in 1617 in central Germany, and had a rich life as a musician and composer. Born of musical parents, Weckmann studied keyboard with his father until he began his formal studies with the great Heinrich Schütz in Dresden. During his travels with Schütz, Weckmann quickly became exposed to Italian influences. Weckmann spent the majority of his career in Hamburg. Situated on the Elba River, Hamburg was a melting pot of nationalities and rich with superb musicians from Germany, Italy, and beyond. We have selected instrumental works by Italian composers who may have influenced Weckmann's music during his study, such as Gabrieli, Castello, Frescobaldi, and Ferro; as well as pieces by influential German composers such as Hammerschmidt, Froberger, and Weckmann himself. This lush, virtuosic music beautifully represents the collaboratory atmosphere in place during Weckmann's lifetime.
Christopher Belluscio (cornetto), Karen Burciaga (violin), Joy Grimes (violin), Liza Malamut (sackbut), Elizabeth Hardy (dulcian), Rebecca Shaw (cello), Matthew Hall (keyboards).
