Ben Perowsky Trio: Chris Speed - Tenor saxophone/Clarinet Scott Colley - Bass Ben Perowsky - Drums
The Ben Perowsky Trio hasn't performed for more than 10 years. Perowsky met Chris Speed after hearing him with Dave Douglas' sextet in 1995, with whom they both toured with in years to follow and he started playing with Scott Colley back in 1987 at Augie's (now Smoke on the upper west side) with Kevin Hays, Ben Monder and numerous others. Their weekly residency at the Knitting Factory and various other clubs in NYC throughout the mid 1990's were always flocked in attendance with young players and listeners. A live CD was released in 1999 pulling from sets in 1997 and 98. The band subsequently toured in Europe and a song was used in the famous bar scene in Will Farrell's Talladega Nights, becoming an inside joke among jazz musicians around the globe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxnLqNM49sYThis critically acclaimed band, with a powerful steamrolling intensity, takes equal cues from the Sonny Rollin's early trio recordings as well as popular and rock music of the day, making their sound distinct in many different settings. Aside from being the vehicle for Perowsky's writing at the time, they are similarly at home and were often found covering/deconstructing Bird, Bjork, Messaien, Pink Floyd, Monk, Hendrix, Ellington and Led Zeppelin.
