Portland Mid East Camp
What: The Portland Oregon Middle Eastern music and bellydance scene has been growing and blossoming, especially in the last ten years. Artists from around the country (and the world) have been feeling the call of the water, of the green forests, of the community of artists in this lovely region, and it is time for our own Northwest Mid Eastern music and dance camp, Portland style! How fitting, in this green city, to have an ecological theme, paying homage to the Earth that all cultures share.
The Portland Mid East Camp is a three-day event at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley (10 miles from Portland's center) which includes music and dance classes from world-renowned teachers in Mid Eastern maqam, percussion, violin, nay, kanun, oud, keyboard, music history, traditional folk dance, and belly dance styles including Cabaret, Tribal, 70s Style, ritual and fusion. There will be two full days of classes as well as three nights of concerts and dance parties. Dancer signups each night will give dancers the opportunity to dance with an authentic live band! Priority for dancer sign-ups will be given to 3-day pass-holders.
Food will be available for purchase (reasonably priced, under $10 per meal) by local sustainable/organic vendors. There will also be sustainable living vendors as well as music and dance accessory vendors. Accommodations are field and forest Gypsy Village camping spaces and a limited number of RV spaces.
This camp is an event that not only connects us to an ancient and primal sacred dance/music ritual, but also opens and enlightens us culturally. At a time when many of the Mid Eastern arts are being destroyed in the Mid East (as we speak!!) both by wars and by ignorance, we have this chance to celebrate the beauty of these art forms and support the artists who are keeping them alive outside the war zones.
Come camp with us, dance all day and night, enjoy organic/sustainable food and lovely people!!
