Aida
The grandest of grand operas, Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece tells the tragic love story of a Pharaoh's daughter competing with her own Ethiopian slave for the love of the heroic Egyptian general Radamès

From the Arena di Verona
Captured live on June 23, 2012

To celebrate the Arena di Verona's 100 years and Verdi's 200 anniversary, Aida, Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece, from the Arena di Verona, will be released in cinemas. "There isn't a place more Aida than the Arena di Verona," announces director Gianfranco de Bosio. The Arena di Verona "is a magical space" where "we create a unique alchemy", says maestro Daniel Oren, "Aida was born for the Arena di Verona."

The grandest of grand operas, Aida is a brilliant balance of spectacular pageantry and emotional intimacy. The tragic love triangle of a Pharaoh's daughter competing with her own Ethiopian slave for the love of the heroic Egyptian general Radamès is one of the most-beloved of all operas. A stunning tale of passion plays itself out against a backdrop of war and cultural oppression in this compelling tale of conflicting loyalties and forbidden passion.

A brilliant cast is highlighted by acclaimed singer Hui He in the title role. The Arena di Verona is the biggest outside lyrical theater in the world. This production, with a world-renowned cast, will revive the same staging as the historical production from 1913 that inaugurated the first lyrical season in the Arena di Verona. "Even if Aida in the Arena di Verona is a classic, we shouldn't think it's all Triumph. There are also intimate parts. In the beginning, Verdi warns us, he indicates the road and starts with a pianissimo to tell us that the important thing is the relationship between the characters," explains Daniel Oren.

Conductor: Daniel Oren  Director: Gianfranco de Bosio  Starring: Hui He, Marco Berti, Andrea Ulbrich  Sung in Italian (with English subtitles)  Running Time: 155 minutes
