Jeff Lofton
NPR affiliate KUT describes jazz trumpeter Jeff Lofton as "... a veritable jazz virtuoso." Lofton studied composition at the University of South Carolina and moved to Austin in 2007. Since then he's been voted Best Jazz Band at the '10-'11 Austin Music Awards during SXSW; January 15, 2009 was named "Jeff Lofton Day" by the City of Austin; and he was inducted into the Texas Music Museum. The Austin American-Statesman's 2010 Out and About 500: Music list noted his "ubiquitous presence and articulate advocacy." His album, "Jazz to the People," made the 2009 top albums lists for the Austin Chronicle and KUT. Lofton opened the 2012 TEDxAustin conference with live improvisation based on one his originals, "Rose," with composer and pianist Graham Reynolds. The Jeff Lofton Trio performs original music in the Austin indie film, "A Swingin' Trio," which has been shown in many film festivals across the country. Reviews of Jeff Lofton's 1950s Miles Davis Tribute include "as good as the real thing" by the San Antonio Express-News. The Jeff Lofton Trio's Thursday night residency in the lounge at Ruth's Chris Steak House celebrates three years in November. He also performs weekly at 7:00 p.m. at Sunday Night Jazz at Strange Brew Lounge Side.
Suzi Stern (from www.SuziStern.com) Jazz singer Suzi Stern is based in Austin, Texas where she performs regularly in addition to appearances across the U.S. and Europe. She has won acclaim for her emotional clear voice and for her own creative compositions and original arrangements. Journalist Brad Buchholtz of The Austin American Statesman says of Stern "Jazz singer Suzi Stern has learned the great secret that transcends art - that the voice from the heart is at the center of all virtuosity."
Born in Buffalo, N.Y. to professional musicians (her father was a jazz violinist and her mother a jazz singer) Stern's jazz indoctrination started at a very young age.
Ms. Stern initially trained as a classical ballet dancer, studying in NYC at American Ballet Theater, The Joffrey Ballet and Harkness Ballet, but it was inevitable that she would return to her original passion and lifelong companion...jazz.
Hope Morgan (from www.hlmmusic.com) Hope Morgan was raised within the rich jazz culture of New York City. Her vocal talents became apparent very early on. By the age of five, she was singing in the church choir. She developed an interest in musical instruments including the violin and piano which she studied quite seriously, learning all the standard repertoire.
Hope's arrival upon Austin's jazz scene in the mid-eighties, represented the addition of an 'authentic' straight-ahead vocal talent to the jazz mix. She has had the opportunity to learn jazz from such great musicians as Archie Schepp, Stanley Cowell, Marlon Brown, Ken McIntyre, Max Roach Gene Ramey and of course the late, great Betty Carter. Menu
