Robbie O'Connell, with Sean Gavin and Jesse Smith.
Robbie O'Connell and I have been good friends for over 30 years. Steeped in the traditional music of the south east of Ireland (Tiperary/Waterford), he grew up in what must have been a constant stew of singing, poetry, and dancing. You see, Robbie's mother was a sister of the famed Clancy Brothers and as soon as the brothers started to become well known, the region and particularly the little hotel Robbie's parents ran became a mecca for not just Irish but international folk musicians. His wonderful voice and warm stage presence has made him a favorite the world over. I am so looking forward to hearing him in the welcoming atmosphere of the Burren.
Splitting with Robbie (and definitely playing a few tunes with him!) will be two young musicians equally influenced by what went before in their families. Sean Gavin is recognized as one of the finest flute players around having grown up with the deep influences of his Co. Clare born fiddler father Mick who moved to Detroit in the 1960s. Jesse Smith is the son of Donna Long, the longtime piano player with Cherish the Ladies. Jesse has a fiddle style all of his own and has been a member of several wonderful bands including Danu, and a dynamic quartet put together by accordion player Colm Gannon.
Great tunes and brilliant songs. That's what this evening all about.
The Burren Backroom series launched in October of 2011 but has already created many memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was created by well-known traditional musicians Tommy and Louise McCarthy in Davis Square, Somerville, Masachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.
Tickets are $23 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.
Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!
